Our history
You don’t get this old by remaining the same. With more than 135 years of history, we’re very proud of our past and we remain committed to continuous innovation.
DeLaval was founded in 1883 as AB Separator by Gustaf de Laval. A descendant of 17th century French émigrés, de Laval was born 1845 in Dalarna, Sweden.

A history of making a difference
Gustaf de Laval patented the centrifugal cream separator in 1878 and a great number of other inventions. As a result he acquired a reputation as both an inventor and industrialist and through these channels he was able to influence many other contemporary inventors.

The DeLaval legacy
During his lifetime, Gustaf de Laval acquired 92 Swedish patents and founded 37 companies. He was not only an outstanding inventor but also a man who saw no limitation to what could be achieved by his research. Gustaf de Laval’s inventions live on to this day and create work for millions of people around the world.
At DeLaval, we continue to work on the farmers’ behalf, striving to make a difference, by finding new ways and solutions to drive progress in milk production. We aim to improve milk quality, food production, animal welfare and the environment of both animals and humans.
DeLaval and Alfa Laval
AB Separator changed name to Alfa Laval in 1963. When the owners, Tetra Pak, sold Alfa Laval in 2000, they kept the portion of the company that is now DeLaval. Alfa Laval today is a company that focuses on energy optimisation, environmental protection and food production.
