Food safety as important as quality says DeLaval Cleaning Solutions

Each year in the United States, approximately 48 million people (1 out of 6 people) suffer from food-borne illness. Of those, 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 die according to estimates from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Congress has agreed that the need for food safety enhancements is pressing so the Food Safety Modernisation Act (FSMA) was signed into law by President Obama on January 4, 2011 to better protect public health by helping to ensure the safety and security of the food supply. The law empowers the Food & Drug Administration to regulate any aspect of food production and recall contaminated food.

At the recent Dairy & Process Expo in Chicago, USA, Steve Gray, Marketing Manager at DeLaval Cleaning Solutions, was interviewed about the FSMA and its potential impact on the dairy industry. Steve is quoted as saying that a lot of emphasis is given to food quality, but he believes that the same level of importance needs to be given to food safety. This, he says, is the only way to fight food-borne illness and the spread of diseases.
