Ontario’s Dairy Research Innovation Centre chooses DeLaval as a supplier

WOODSTOCK, Ontario. (Sept. 10, 2013) — DeLaval has been awarded a contract to supply milking, cooling and herd management solutions to Canada’s new $25-million Dairy Research Innovation Centre at the Elora Research Station in southern Ontario. Construction of the state-of-the-art dairy research facility – a joint project between the Agricultural Research Institute of Ontario, the University of Guelph and the Ontario dairy industry – is slated for completion in October 2014.

The center is designed to address the research, education, and training needs of the Canadian dairy industry. Faculty and students will study the health, reproduction, nutrition, life-cycle, emissions, welfare and value-added milk components of its 240-lactating cows, along with dry and replacement cows.

“DeLaval is honored to be involved in the development of such a world class, multi-disciplinary dairy research facility,” said Andrew Ritchie, Managing Director of DeLaval in Canada. “Our strategy is to actively support institutions that are educating the next generation of dairy farmers. The knowledge and understanding we exchange with these young folks gives us insight into the sustainable, technology-driven demands of tomorrow’s dairy producers.”

According to DeLaval, in the past three years the company has provided a range of its solutions to other North American dairy research facilities: University of Saskatchewan; Dairy and Swine Research and Development Center of Sherbrooke, Quebec; and Alfred College and Cornell University in New York.

DeLaval and its local dealer, Norwell Dairy Systems in Drayton, Ontario, will install and support the following solutions at the Dairy Research Innovation Centre:

  • 24-Bail DeLaval herringbone internal rotary milking parlour equipped with milk meters and sort gates
  • DeLaval Activity System for 240 lactating cows and all replacement heifers
  • 8,000-Gal. and 800-gal. DeLaval DXNAF milk tanks with instant cooling systems
  • Six DelPro MU486 milking units for metabolic and special needs barns
  • One DeLaval CF1000+ calf feeder with four feeding stations
